The Muslim preacher wanted in connection with the acid attack on two British girls is in hospital after being hit by a tear gas canister during a scuffle with police.
Sheikh Issa Ponda, who is wanted for inciting violence in Zanzibar, was wounded as he tried to escape officers in Morogoro, 200 miles from Dar es Salaam. Witnesses described dramatic scenes as Sheikh Ponda attempted to flee in a car. As police surrounded the cleric they were pelted with stones by his followers. Officers were seen shooting guns in to the air as a warning and it is believed Sheikh Ponda was hit in the shoulder with a canister during the chaos. Although it was initially reported he was captured, it is believed he made an escape and police only caught up with him when he went to hospital for treatment to his injuries. Tonight he was in Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam. which is being guarded by police dressed in civilian clothes. It is believed he will later be arrested for disturbing the peace.

Tanzania spokesman Advera Senso said: “There was a Muslim crusade at 2pm on Saturday in the Morogoro region.“Sheikh Ponda was there and spoke for a short time before leaving in a car. Police attempted to stop the car from the front to make an arrest. “His followers protested and tried to stop the officers. They were hit with stones as they tried to apprehend Ponda.” The Sheikh visited Zanzibar in the weeks leading up to the attack on Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup. He was seen encouraging his followers to protest against ‘colonisation’ from Christians and inciting Muslim youths to violence. Although he is not being directly linked to the attack on the London teenagers, police believe his inflammatory speeches could have encouraged followers to lash out. Officers are still searching for the culprits – believed to be two men. One friend of the pair told how one of the two men involved in the unprovoked attack "smiled" before throwing acid. Speaking from Zanzibar, medical student Olivia Moore told Channel 4 News: "The two men were on a moped and they went past a group of tourists. "They stopped for the girls and the two men then looked at each other, nodded, and then the man on the back of the bike smiled and threw acid on the girls. "From then on it's just chaotic. There was no incident that preceded the actual attack.
